HireAHelper is an application used to connect service providers with customers in a given area. Those in need of contractor services can browse through listed providers to find someone in their area to hire. It is similar to hiring someone via a local advertisement with the added benefits of having customer service assistance and credit card payment options.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

HireAHelper was founded by Mike Glanz in May of 2006 and went live online in 2007. The site has approximately 13,000 unique visitors per month.

What are the differences to other apps?

This is a fast way to find local contract help for common chores. The site allows for price comparison and reviews, taking the search process a step further than simply scanning the yellow pages for help. HireAHelper also accepts credit cards for convenience and offers customer service in case a helper does not show up for a job.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

Consultants sign up, provide relevant information, and set rates. Both individuals and companies can sign up as helpers. All payments go through the site so that fees may be deducted.

Customers may search for helpers by movers, cleaners, lawn help, or day labor. After choosing a category, a customer enters the zip code and date that help is required. The results include rates based on the number of helpers requested for the job. Users may then view availability or read reviews. If the customer wishes to get a quote from a certain provider, they are directed to a page designed to collect further information about the location, job specifics, and contact information. If the helper is hired, the customer is given an authorization code. This code is given to the helper after the job is complete so that payment release is authorized.

To sign up as a helper, users must accept terms and conditions as well as a direct deposit agreement for payment. This is not optional. Registration then requires an email address, password, company name and preferred job type (moving, lawn, cleaning, general). Payment details, including address, distance a provider is willing to travel for a job, time zone and banking information.

Those seeking help may use the site without registration. Contact information is asked when reserving a helper for a job.

What does it cost to use the application?

Consultants may register for free. For any job received through HireAHelper, a 15% fee from the final payment is deducted to cover advertising and fee processing. Customers do not have to pay fees to the site, but are responsible for paying the fee to the helper through the site.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Service providers who are having difficulty finding local clients may benefit, but they must be aware of the 15% fee that will be taken from their earnings. This should be weighed seriously, as it adds up quickly.

People having difficulty finding local help for manual labor may find services here. During this review, very few options were presented for some areas. There have also been complaints that reviews are edited and skewed to reflect an all positive experience.
